Earth Day

Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. The name and concept of Earth Day was pioneered by John McConnell (peace activist) in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. The first Proclamation of Earth Day was by San Francisco, the City of Saint Francis, patron saint of ecology. Earth Day was first observed in San Francisco and other cities on March 21, 1970, the first day of Spring. This day of nature’s equipoise was later sanctioned in a Proclamation signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations where it is observed each year. About the same time a separate Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. While this April 22 Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues. In 2009, the United Nations designated April 22 International Mother Earth Day.

Success Organics Celebrates International Biodiversity Day

Sunday, May 22, 2011, Columbus, Ohio – Join Success Organics in celebrating International Biodiversity Day, an annual event established on May 22 by the United Nations in 1993 to help eliminate the disappearance of plant and animal species caused by man’s encroachment on the environment through development of natural habitats.  In honor of the 2011 commemoration which is “The Year of The Forrest”, container gardening experts from Success Organics, a local non-profit organic gardening group that is an outgrowth of Dress For Success, will demonstrate how to reuse and recycle common containers such as McDonald’s coffee cups, plastic fruit boxes, and egg cartons to plant vegetables and flowers.  This event will take place as follows:

United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity Actor Edward Norton said, “Most people if they live in a big city like I do wouldn’t say that their life depended on forests or on trees, but it does.  Without large, healthy forests on this planet, we would literally have no oxygen to breathe, no clean water to drink, much less food to eat, and almost no medicines to heal us…”

One authority on agriculture and the environment estimated that if each person cultivated and maintained just seven medium size containers of vegetables or flowering plants, she would create enough oxygen to give them enough pure oxygen to breathe for a lifetime. Last year in the United States alone we used enough plastic containers to wrap around the country three times.  This International Biodiversity Day we stem this trend and teach city dwellers how to grow food in small spaces.  Participants may post their best reused container vegetable plant on the Success Organics web site starting from 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 24 to 12 midnight Friday, May 27, 2011.  The owner of the entry judged most creative will be awarded a $50 gift certificate to Wal-Mart the help get their home garden started.
